Fall in love with Australia

Today, our Talent Acquisition Specialist, Jodie Knight, from our Sydney office blogs on making the move to Australia and having a career as a recruitment consultant.

Four years ago, on Valentines Day, I made the long flight in pursuit of the Sydney sunshine from the UK on my own, feeling both excited and nervous about my new adventure. I had researched the Australian recruitment market and decided that Sydney was going to be the city to take my recruitment career to the next level. Four years later I am feeling very lucky that not only have I fallen in love with Sydney but I have found a great work 'home' in Morgan McKinley, made some friends for life and also enhanced my recruitment career!

Admittedly, since arriving, the Australian recruitment market has changed slightly over the past few years - it has become more specialised and more competitive. However, despite difficult market conditions in 2013, our Sydney office witnessed their most successful year to date, reporting a 28% growth in revenue.

But, how did we do this? There are several answers but, 'our people' is the number one reason without a doubt. Employing the right people with the right attitude and experience is key to any successful business.

Since joining the Sydney office a few months ago I have been lucky enough to be part of a very welcoming, collaborative, high performing and multicultural team. I am definitely not the only English recruiter to have made the brave move down under! But don't worry we do have enough Aussies, Kiwis and Canadians to balance us Brits out and keep the 'office banter' alive especially when it comes to sporting events! After all, just like any other sales company, our sales people (the recruiters) are just as competitive. Outside of work we get together to celebrate our successes after all, we are a team, not just colleagues, you can even see the team in the photo above.

In my role as Talent Acquisition Specialist, it is my responsibility to attract new talent into the business, who share and live the Morgan McKinley values. It's these core values that are fundamental to our organisation and our continued growth and success, and we want to make sure that the people we hire are also able to progress their career with us.

So what's the outlook for 2014? Our clients are increasing headcount and feeling optimistic about the year ahead and so are we. Demand is still very strong in Australia for recruitment consultants, in particular within the Accounting and Finance sector and we are always open to speaking to experienced overseas recruiters.  The market is a lot smaller than the UK and to be successful here you need to have a long term approach when dealing with clients and candidates.

In short, it's very simple - if you are prepared to build trust with your clients, candidates and work colleagues, embrace change when market conditions change, communicate with everyone you work with and be committed to a long and successful career, your dream job in Australia with Morgan McKinley awaits you.
