[Video] Career Progression: My Story

Senior Consultant Ruby Yeats shares with us her Morgan McKinley journey so far, including two promotions in two years!

Changing career and country

I started my career as a corporate lawyer. I’ve already written a blog about that, so I won’t go into huge detail - but essentially I found myself looking for a career change. I saw a role advertised, for an Associate Consultant in Morgan McKinley’s strategy division. I spoke with some pretty impressive stakeholders from the business, and six weeks later there I was, in a whole new role in a whole new country.

That was two and a half years ago. On reflection, I probably wasn’t as considered in this career move as I always recommend my candidates to be! But somehow I ended up in a role which has developed and grown, and allowed me to do the same.

Starting the role at Morgan McKinley

One of the best things about Morgan McKinley as a business is that it has huge scope to shape and create new roles and career pathways, depending on the strengths of its employees. It took me just under a year to be promoted to a full Consultant role, so I had 11 months to learn about the industry, to make connections, and to hone my candidate management skills before I was expected to bill anything.

Career Progression

I moved up to Consultant once the business was sure I was set up for success; I had a great portfolio of clients to work with, and the sponsorship of my direct managers and other mentors in the business to make sure I would hit the ground running. 11 months later, and I have just been promoted to Senior Consultant, which again progresses my responsibilities and pathway within the organisation. While the first promotion changed my daily activity (from sourcing candidates and managing applications, towards more business development, account management and fostering client connections), the transition to Senior Consultant has greater impacted my internal activity - for example, I now lead the blogging training for all new starters to the company.

Life at Morgan McKinley

I’ve found a really nice balance of large firm infrastructures, such as our global data processing centre, our external training sessions, and our world-class talent management software, but it comes with a small boutique feel. I speak to our two managing directors daily - they’re always there to share some advice, some life lessons, and sometimes even some English chocolate!

I’ve never worked in a different recruitment firm so I can’t draw a direct comparison, but I doubt there is any out there which can offer the same level of support and flexibility. It’s not just my recruitment career that the company has supported - since joining, I’ve earned my personal training certificates and started coaching at a boutique rowing studio in the city, and nobody bats an eyelid when I leave the office early once a week.

I’ve run a marathon, and the lunchtime training sessions for that were no problem from the business’ perspective. Best of all, I’ve built a great network of connections through our industry and charity events. Plus, I’ve got to work on my event management skills in hosting an annual charity speed dating events for two years running.

Looking for your next career move?

If I could offer anyone a piece of advice in searching out their next career move (something I should be relatively proficient at by now!) it would be to look at your future career pathway and make sure the progression opportunities are there. At Morgan McKinley no two days are the same, and I’m confident the next promotion will open up even more doors for me both in the business, and in developing a new suite of technical skills.
