Run Ger Run | The Morgan McKinley Million

Morgan McKinley’s Corporate Social Responsibility is to raise one million euros towards charities.

As part of Morgan McKinley’s drive to enhance our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts across our global business we recently launched the Morgan McKinley Million which is our challenge as an organisation to contribute the equivalent of one million euros to charities and worthy causes across the Morgan McKinley global footprint of offices.

In short it is about harnessing the collective goodwill and team spirit of our 800 people to do more by going beyond to improve the lives of others less fortunate than ourselves. In order for us to do this we have to push ourselves way beyond what we have done in the past. Like many organisations our employees want to help others and the concept of raising money, volunteering and collectively coming together to help all sounds great in theory; the reality however is different... It is hard work and requires real effort.

So early 2016, the suggestion emerged about why not set ourselves a goal. A really stretching goal that would challenge… Hence the concept of raising the equivalent of one million euros between now and the end of 2018. To put into context this is at least 10 times more than we have done in the last 3 years! So we organised teams in every country: Ireland, UK, China, India, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Australia to really start planning, and on the 5th of July we launched the initiative across our Global business. You can view photos on our Facebook page and our launch day video below:

A key part was asking every person to make a pledge about what they think they could do to contribute, raise funds, volunteer etc. We have had a brilliant response and some of the pledges are truly ambitious and very exciting.

I kicked off the pledges with my pledge that I would run 6 half marathons between now and the end of the year and that I would personally contribute for every mile that I complete. For me this is a tall order as I have never run close to the 13 miles of a half marathon before and given that I am closer to 50 than 40, starting my running career at this stage of my life is probably not the best strategy! But once pledged it has to be done... You can read more about my challenge here.

I plan to update with a blog after each half marathon so you can hear about my triumphs or failures (hopefully the former). The first half marathon is planned for early August in Dublin.....Wish me luck!!!
